Pediatric Organ Donation for Children in India

When a child needs an organ transplant, every day can matter. For another child who has lost their life, organ donation can offer a precious second chance to someone waiting for a transplant.

In India, children can be both organ donors and transplant recipients, subject to medical, ethical and legal requirements. Pediatric organ donation is an important part of India’s wider organ donation system, but it also involves considerations that are different from adult donation.

Can a Child Donate Organs in India?

Yes. Children can become deceased organ donors when they meet the required medical and legal criteria. In the case of a deceased donor below 18 years of age, consent from a parent or an authorized relative is required according to the applicable rules.

Before donation can take place, death must be formally determined by authorized medical professionals according to the prescribed procedures. The medical team caring for the child continues to focus on saving the child’s life; organ donation is considered only after death has been established.

Why Is Pediatric Donation Different?

Children’s organs are still developing, and their body size can be very different from that of adults. Therefore, when an organ becomes available, transplant teams consider several medical factors, including:

Blood group and compatibility
Size and age of the donor and recipient
Medical urgency
Organ condition
Other clinical and allocation criteria

These factors help the authorized transplant system determine which recipient is medically suitable.

Children Waiting for Transplants

Children may require a transplant because of congenital conditions, genetic diseases, severe infections or other causes of organ failure. A successful transplant can allow a child to return to school, participate in everyday activities and continue growing and developing.

For families waiting for an organ, donation can therefore represent much more than a medical procedure—it can mean the possibility of a new beginning.

The Importance of Family Conversations – The death of a child is devastating and discussions about organ donation must always be handled with sensitivity and compassion.

Organ Donation and the Gift of Life

Pediatric organ donation reminds us that one family’s tragedy may, through donation, help another family experience hope.

India’s organ donation system operates under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act and related regulations, with the National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) and the regional and state transplant organizations playing important roles.

For official information about organ donation and transplantation in India, refer to NOTTO and the authorized transplant organizations in your state.
